The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has begun an investigation after a freight train derailed in Manchester.

The freight train, which was made up of 24 wagons and 2 Class 66 locomotives, was heading from Peak Forest to Salford but derailed when it passed over a bridge in Audenshaw.

The 2 locomotives and 10 wagons, which were loaded with aggregate, passed over the bridge safely, but the next 9 wagons derailed, with the last wagon coming to a stand on the bridge itself.

Substantial damage was caused to the railway infrastructure and wagons, but thankfully, no injuries were caused.

The RAIB says that the condition of the railway infrastructure will be considered as part of its investigation, along with any underlying management factors and the condition of the wagons involved.
