The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has begun an investigation after a freight train derailed in Manchester.
The freight train, which was made up of 24 wagons and 2 Class 66 locomotives, was heading from Peak Forest to Salford but derailed when it passed over a bridge in Audenshaw.
The 2 locomotives and 10 wagons, which were loaded with aggregate, passed over the bridge safely, but the next 9 wagons derailed, with the last derailed wagon coming to a stand on the bridge itself.
Substantial damage was caused to the railway infrastructure and wagons, but thankfully, no injuries were caused.
The RAIB says that the condition of the railway infrastructure will be considered as part of its investigation, along with any underlying management factors and the condition of the wagons involved.
Responses
Many more wagon’s on the line this date 24+ with 21 trains on this line daily the track was over used the neighbours were never informed just told to wait 20 day for response. Why the broken chain of management can’t get to grips with there job at hand. This was an accident waiting to happen with years of complains been ignored
Another infrastructure failure ? Obviously the RAIB investigation will point the finger of blame
Clueless conclusion unhelpful comment
