Passengers travelling on Merseyrail train services during weekends in January can take advantage of a special New Year ticket offer that allows unlimited travel across Merseyside for a fraction of the normal fare.
Valid only at weekends from Saturday, January 4th, until Sunday, January 26, the reduced price tickets are available on all Merseyrail lines, with adult tickets for an unlimited day’s travel costing just £2 and £1 for children aged 5 to 15.
The special offer is being funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority from money recovered from Stadler, the manufacturer of Merseyrail’s new Class 777 trains.
The special offer comes as unlimited travel has been working with Stadler, Merseyrail, and Network Rail, to improve the availability and performance of the new Class 777 trains while they are being the rolled out.
The unlimited travel offer is one of several initiatives by Steve Rotheram, the mayor of Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, to help reduce the cost of the region’s public transport.
Other measures include Merseyrail train fares being frozen, bus fares capped at just £2, providing a concessionary travel scheme where young people can enjoy daily bus travel for just £2.20, and allowing local people to claim a travel pass seven years before the rest of the country.
The latest offer comes after a £2 return was introduced last July for passengers travelling from Headbolt Lane, Kirkby, and Fazakerley stations to Moorfields or Liverpool Central.
“Making public transport more affordable and accessible is a key part of my mission to build a transport network for everyone. This £2 unlimited travel offer will help start off 2025 in the best way by helping people get around the Liverpool City Region without worrying about cost. Investing in new trains and infrastructure is about making life better for people—whether that’s getting to work, visiting family, or just enjoying a day out. We’ve capped bus fares at £2, protected the country’s most generous concessionary travel scheme, and delivered the UK’s first publicly owned train fleet in a generation. I hope as many people as possible will take full advantage and use it to see the best our city region has to offer – from the coastline of Formby and New Brighton, to wonderful museums and cultural attractions in Liverpool city centre!”
Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region.
