A full seven-day closure of between Eve and New Year’s Day will mean that no trains or road vehicles will be able to use the level crossing.

The A10 road which crosses the railway at Foxton has seen an increase in both road and rail usage in recent years, which has meant both the track and road surface need to be addressed.

The closure of the level crossing will allow Network Rail to replace four points at a nearby junction and 615 meters of track on both running lines leading up to and through the level crossing, before addressing the condition of the road and foot crossing decks.

Trains in and around the Cambridge area will be subject to changes and alterations over a period of 12 days over the Christmas season.

Motorists are warned that a diversion will be in place during the seven days the crossing is closed and on some nights after the seven-day closure.

The diversion route will be clearly signposted, which will take drivers onto the A505 between and Duxford before taking the A1301 between Duxford and Trumpington to rejoin the A10.

Pedestrians wishing to cross the line will be able to travel by a fully accessible minibus, which be laid on by Network rail during the time these works are taking place.

This work is being undertaken as part of the local signalling upgrade programme, which is modernising the railway signals and the level crossing warning system as part of the construction of Cambridge South station, the building of which has already caused disruption to local services already this autumn.

“We’re really sorry for the disruption, but we need extended access to the level crossing to get this vital job done, and the roads and railways are typically quieter in the period between Christmas and new year. Once installed, the new level crossing decks and track will serve motorists, pedestrians and rail passengers for many years to come.”

Simon Milburn, Infrastructure Director for Network Rail Anglia
