As a thank you to people affected by the suspension of train services between Ayr and Stranraer, for two weeks starting next Monday, 18th November customers can purchase two tickets for the price of one for travel over the line.
The offer is an attempt by ScotRail to encourage people to again travel by train after the disruption caused by a fire at the former Station Hotel in Ayr.
The offer is valid on all ScotRail services to or from Stranraer, Barrhill, Girvan, and Maybole stations, and customers will need to download a voucher and present it along with a valid rail ticket when travelling.
To take advantage of the offer, customers should download a voucher from the ScotRail website and present it along with a valid rail ticket when travelling.
The two-for-one offer can be used on all ScotRail services to or from Stranraer, Barrhill, Girvan, and Maybole stations.
Customers taking advantage of the two-for-one offer can use their tickets for travel any time between Monday, 18th November 2024 and Friday, 31st January 2025.
More details about the offer and how to take advantage of it are available on the ScotRail website.
While services to Stranraer were suspended, Network Rail took advantage of the line’s closure to complete an upgrade of Laggansarroch viaduct near Girvan, including renewing 1km of track.
“This is a fantastic offer for our customers and will allow people travelling to and from Stranraer, Barrhill, Girvan, and Maybole stations to claim a free ticket for family or friends. We know that the disruption caused by the fire at the former Station Hotel in Ayr had a significant impact on people in the area. The offer is an opportunity for us to thank everyone for the patience they showed during that disruption, and we look forward to welcoming people on board.”

Perhaps the Stranraer branch line from Ayr could be electrified so that ScotRail can use the Class 334, Class 380 and Class 385 to Stranraer.
This is a good offer.
However, something needs to be done about the station at Stranraer. It is still located on what is now the semi-derelict pier that used to be used for the ferries to N Ireland before they all moved to Cairn Ryan. Travellers to Stranraer face a quite lengthy walk from this station into town, on a weed infested, and rubbish strewn pier.
Surely there must be a case for a new station actually in Stranraer town?
As it is, this must put off a lot of people travelling to Stranraer by train.
