The East Lancashire Railway held its ever-popular Summer Diesel Gala back in June and brought in some excellent visitors to the railway.

The railway runs from Heywood to via Bury Bolton Street, Burrs Country Park, Summerseat, Ramsbottom and Irwell Vale.

We start the video at Rawtenstall, the northern terminus of the railway, as we see BR Class 37109 arrive with a service train. BR No. 40012 ‘Aureol’ was on the rear ready to take the train back to Bury.

After time at Rawtenstall, 40012 is then filmed passing over the at the station.

We then move to Townsend Fold, which is a small-level crossing not far from Rawtenstall.

There is a small signal box here, which at the time of filming was undergoing work.

Why Townsend Fold? Well, we wanted to film visiting Class 37 No. 37425. This loco was, until recently, in service with and appeared in a striking Regional Railways livery.

The locomotive was formally named ‘Sir Robert McAlpine / Concrete Bob’, however, it appeared at the ELR gala without nameplates since its transfer of ownership to the Harry Needle Railroad Company.

37425 was filmed heading towards Bury with a great noise coming from the EE Type 3 locomotive.

Our last location for this short video was Brooksbottom Viaduct in Summerseat. The viaduct was built in 1845 to take the railway over the River Irwell.

Filmed at Brooksbottom Viaduct was D832 ‘Onslaught’ heading to Rawtenstall as well as 45108 with a parcels train to Ramsbottom, where it would terminate and head into the sidings there.

A number of readers asked us on the day what we used for filming our videos and how they were still without the use of a tripod. Well, for this video we used two DJI Osmo Mobile gimbals to help keep the phones still. You can read more about our filming gear over on our dedicated page.
