A passenger train passed over a set of points at almost double the speed limit near Manor Park station in east London.

Fortunately, the incident, which happened on 24th September 2024, did not cause the train to derail and no one on board was injured.

However, at least one passenger fell to the floor and a number of passengers lost their footing as a result of the sudden movement by the rush-hour train.

The incident happened at around 08.11 when the passenger service was travelling at approximately 45 mph (72 km/h).

The maximum permitted speed at this set of points is 25 mph (40 km/h).

By crossing the points at such a speed, the train jolted sideways, causing passengers to lose their balance.

Fortunately, the train did not derail and no damage was caused to either the rolling stock or railway infrastructure.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) have launched a preliminary examination of this incident, because of how severe the consequences of this incident could have been.

After analysing the evidence, the RAIB will publish a safety digest on the Manor Park overspeed, which will be available on its website in due course.
