Network Rail is advising passengers that mainline trains will not run to Liverpool Lime Street station this Sunday (20 October), as it will be carrying out work in the area.

Engineers will be replacing signals in Edge Hill and on Runcorn Viaduct, a Grade II listed structure that crosses the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal from Runcorn to Widnes in Cheshire.

Other workers will be renewing track in the Liverpool suburb of Mossley Hill.

Network Rail, which manages the station, explains that the track layout in the area is complicated, and therefore most lines into Liverpool Lime Street station need to be closed to allow workers to carry out the replacement and renewal work safely.

Train operating companies, including Northern, CrossCountry, Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express, will run amended timetables and will operate rail replacement buses.

Over recent years, Lime Street station has helped millions of passengers travel to and from the city, including for events such as the Grand National and Eurovision.

Liverpool Lime Street station itself will be open, with passengers able to take rail replacement services and Merseyrail trains, which are not affected by the work. The station’s shops will also be open.

“We are very sorry to passengers whose journeys will be affected by the work. The signalling upgrade is necessary to allow trains to run safely and reliably into Liverpool for years to come.

“I’d advise all passengers to plan their journey in advance as timetables will be amended on Sunday 20 October.”
