A local Norwich charity, the Joe Dix Foundation, has installed a bleed control kit at Greater Anglia‘s Norwich station.

Bleed control kits are designed for use to treat injuries in any extreme bleeding incident such as those caused by a knife attack.

Such injuries often lead to death within minutes if not treated.

The kit contains instructions on how to help someone who is bleeding heavily and equipment to stop the loss of blood including a tourniquet to restrict blood flow, ‘rapid gauze‘ that helps stop bleeding in 60 seconds, a trauma dressing, gloves, and a high-powered light.

The charity KnifeSavers has an app available for download which has instructions on how to use the kit.

The Joe Dix Foundation was set up in memory of teenager Joe Dix, who was murdered in Norwich in January 2022.

It aims to promote essential first aid and ensure that bleed kits are available in major public places across both Norwich and the wider county of Norfolk.

In Norwich, bleed kits can be found in many locations such as hotels, public houses, taxi company offices, and schools, while in the county they are available in the village halls in Coltishall and Strumpshaw.

The bleed kit at Norwich station has been stored in a secure locked cabinet that already contained an automatic external defibrillator.

A code is required to unlock the cabinet, and that is known only by Greater Anglia staff at the staff and East of England Ambulance Service control.

Bleed kits are being installed at stations throughout the UK, including at Northampton and at Haymarket in Scotland.
