The Department for Transport (DfT) has allocated £1.4 million to 32 projects developing innovative designs in the transport sector.
Projects range from an air purification product to tackle pollution to a pedestrian management system to enhance road safety.
It is hoped they will boost economic growth by creating jobs, leading to further innovation and confirming the UK’s position as a global leader in green transport.
Each project could secure up to £45,000 of funding for designs that would contribute to cleaner, greener, and more efficient transport networks.
This follows a £15 million investment over the last decade by the Transport Research and Innovation Grant (TRIG) programme, which supports industries researching new technologies and collaborations that help deliver economic growth.
This year’s funding aimed to focus on projects researching local transport decarbonisation, maritime decarbonisation and emerging technologies such as AI and drones.
Past projects include a project to tackle disruption at railway stations to help manage the flow of people and improve safety, and an invention that uses sound waves and music vibrations from a speaker to reduce pollution.
The railway industry is also at the forefront of new technology, with its Unlocking Innovation programme and Network Rail’s Rail Innovation and Development Centre.
