There are 60 stations in total on the Tyne and Wear Metro, and one teenager ran to all of them in one day in memory of his father, who sadly died back in 2017.

Charles McManus, who is 18 from North Shields, took on the 77-mile challenge on the 15th September.

All money raised from the challenge is going to St Oswald’s Hospice in Newcastle and the Brain Tumour Charity, with £5,000 being raised so far.

Dubbed the Metro Marathon, the run started at 3am at South Holton Metro station in Sunderland, and 17.5 hours later, Charles finished the challenge at Monument Metro station at 20:30.

 “I just wanted to do something to help others who are in a similar position to my family, when dad was unwell.

“I was quite focussed but at the end it got quite emotional – all my family were there, including my gran.

“My legs are absolutely horrendous, I’m really struggling to walk.

“I stopped at every single station and took a picture at every station, I think South Shields or Whitley Bay were my favourites.”
