Stadler has unveiled its new interoperable and multisystem Bo’Bo’ locomotives for continental Europe, securing an initial contract for 36 units.
The deal also provides the option to acquire up to 93 more vehicles.
Swiss freight operator SBB had awarded Stadler the tender in early 2024, for the supply of thirty-six electric multisystem locomotives (25 kVAC/ 15 kVAC / 3 kV DC).
SBB Cargo is set to replace its ageing Re420 locomotives and has chosen Stadler as a dependable partner for the new generation of electric multi-system Bo’Bo’ locomotives.
The latest Bo’Bo’ locomotives represent the natural progression of the established and successful EUROLIGHT, EURODUAL, and EURO9000 series, crafted for both freight and passenger operations on European railways.
Locomotives stand at the forefront of technology, designed to meet both present and future demands efficiently and dependably, thus providing economic, environmental, and operational advantages to freight operators.
Their adaptable design can accommodate either two 500 kW diesel engines or two traction battery modules, delivering up to 2MW of power for last-mile operations on non-electrified tracks.
A hybrid of both power sources is also an option. Additionally, they come equipped with a Radio Remote Control System for track work operations or shunting tasks in yards.
In terms of performance, efficiency, and flexibility, these locomotives represent a significant advancement in the European Bo’Bo’ segment.
They offer a maximum tractive effort of up to 350 kN and a tractive power of 7 MW at the wheel rim.
Additionally, they are notable for their low energy consumption and the availability of a digital automatic coupler among other operational benefits.
The trains comply with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) and come with a variety of country-specific packages.
These packages encompass traditional automatic train protection systems and the European Train Control System (ETCS), facilitating seamless cross-border travel.
Initially configured for Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, there is potential for future expansion to include additional countries.
The locomotives come equipped with two driver’s cabs, each designed to meet stringent ergonomic standards and to fully satisfy the latest European comfort and noise regulations.
These cabs, featuring an HVAC system, are crafted to ensure optimal driver comfort within the operating environment. For enhanced manoeuvrability, each cab includes two rear-view cameras and dual-side control panels to aid in shunting operations.
“We have used all of our experience from previous successful families to offer the next-generation solution for rail transportation with the new Bo’Bo’ locomotive. I am convinced it will set a new standard in this segment.”
Iñigo Parra, Executive Vice President of Stadler Division Spain
“A modern and efficient fleet is a prerequisite for successful rail freight transport at SBB. We are confident that, with the vehicles from Stadler, we are acquiring a locomotive with which we can reliably serve our customers and lead Swiss rail freight transport forward into the future. We are taking a central step in the necessary transformation of rail freight transport. ”
Alexander Muhm, Head of Freight Services at SBB
The 80 year old train manufacturing company has had a brilliant year, when it comes to securing contracts to build new trains for railway systems around the globe,
So far this year they have secured orders for Hydrogen powered trains in California, 24 Battery-Diesel shunting locomotives for New Zealand, and the construction of 50 Flirt Electrics for Poland.
