Transport for has issued an Invitation to Tender for four manufacturers to design and build a new fleet of trams.

UK, , Hitachi and are the four manufacturers who can now proceed to the next stage of the procurement process with to design and build the new trams.

The new trams are expected to feature air-conditioning, real time travel info and charging points, along with areas designed for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs and luggage.

The initial contract will be for 24 new trams to replace the oldest trams on the network – which are now nearly 25 years old.

There is an option in the contract to replace the trams that were introduced from 2012.

“This invitation for tram manufacturers to submit bids for the design and manufacture of the next generation of trams on the London Trams network is a significant next step.  Subject to funding, these trams will start to enter service in the late 2020s and will provide customers with more comfortable and reliable journeys for many years to come.”

Scott Haxton, TfL’s Director of Capital Delivery Infrastructure

  1. Some of the Eastern European manufacturers such as Modertrans and Pesa might be cheaper, offer better designs and at least equally good quality.

  2. I hope we’re getting 7 car trams like in Edinburgh and to lengthen the majority of platforms across the network in order for the new 7 car trams and potentially 10 car trams made up of 2×5 existing variobans. Please don’t let Alstom get the bid as they’re definitely going to introduce the HORRIBLE and BORING citadis to the trams network

    1. Its going to be the same 2025 tube stock going on the piccadilly line that will be replacing these trains but don’t expect them replacing the bakerloo line trains until the 2030s because of tfl’s crippling Bank account
