Brian Terry, who lives in South East Newcastle, has become the first train driver to complete the Northumberland training programme.
Mr Terry is now qualified to drive Class 158 trains on the 18-mile route. The long term plan is to have more than 100 drivers able to drive trains between Newcastle and Ashington.
2 daytime services an hour will run between Monday and Saturday, with one train an hour running in the evenings and on Sundays.
Northern has previously said that no single fare will cost more than £3.
It’s really exciting. They’ve been talking about this line for a long time and now it’s about to open.
