The project to build a new station at Elland in Calderdale, West Yorkshire has made significant progress with the announcement of a contractor for the final stage of development work.
Keltbray Infrastructure Services Limited have been contracted to carry out on-site surveys which will be used to develop an in-depth design plan and finalise the business case for the station.
It is hoped that the surveys will be completed by next summer, after which final approval can be sought and construction can commence.
Once built, the station will allow passengers from Elland to travel along the Calder Valley Line to other West Yorkshire towns and cities, including Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield and Leeds.
The Calder Valley Line also has direct trains through to Manchester Victoria, and a new timetable for the line was launched at the end of May.
Services on the line are operated by Northern, which runs trains across Yorkshire, the North East and the North West.
Although work on constructing Elland station has not yet begun, planning approval has already been granted, and Network Rail has given the green light to the preliminary designs.
The land required for the station will be bought by Calderdale Council and then transferred to Network Rail, and the project is being overseen by West Yorkshire Combined Authority together with Calderdale Council.
Plans are also underway to build a new station in Bradford, and to electrify the Calder Valley Line.
Elland Rail Station will provide a vital new link for the transport network in Calderdale, improving access to jobs, education and other opportunities.
This is an important step forward for the project, which will help us build a better-connected region that works for all.
Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin
It’s great news that the Combined Authority’s plans for Elland Rail Station are moving forward, with the appointment of a contractor allowing development work to progress.
The new station will be a key part of our Next Chapter for Calderdale, bringing huge benefits for the borough, improving access to the wider region and supporting local growth.
