Southern Locomotives Ltd has released an update on 34028 Eddystone and a potential return to the mainline for the locomotive.
The company has been approached by two railtour promoters regarding the use of a Class 7 / 8 locomotives on the mainline.
Whilst previously the company has said no to mainline operation, it looks like the time has come for one of their locomotives to head onto the ‘big’ railway.
The Swanage Railway, where 34028 Eddystone operates, would play a big part in operating 34028 Eddystone on the mainline, mainly due to their experience of operating U Class 31806 on the mainline.
SLL has not confirmed any agreements with any mainline TOC yet, but the company says that they have decided to install air braking equipment, allowing the locomotive to haul any mainline train.
The initial cost of equipping 34028 Eddystone is expected to be around £50,000, and supporters are being asked to help fund this as the company is anxious not to deflect from other restoration projects.

As a SSL supporter, it is with the supporters that will have the last word. Hopefully it won’t be disappointing. We have to make sure the restoration of our locomotives aren’t affected by this news.
Yes any ‘new’ steam loco is welcome but another Bullied MN would be more so!
It would be good to see it on the main line that’s what it was built for give it a good run
