Testing of battery trains is to begin soon between York and Manchester Airport and between Leeds and Liverpool Lime Street.

The train has had a new distinct livery applied which Hitachi says celebrates the collaboration between TransPennine Express, Angel Trains and Hitachi Rail.

A variety of tests need to take place, which will include the ability to perform on the hills, regen braking, emission savings, and battery mode in stations.

This is the first UK trial where a diesel engine has been replaced with a battery on an intercity train.

The battery generates a peak power figure of 700kw and it is hoped the emissions and fuel costs will be reduced by as much as 30%.
