Part of the ‘hardest working fleet in the UK’, the train reached this major milestone since being named in 2017.

The train was named “Flying Scouseman” by the readers of the Liverpool Echo in the summer of 2017 and has spent the past 7 years in service on the West Coast Main Line.

It has recently been comprehensively refurbished as part of the largest fleet upgrade in UK rail history.

Earlier this month, upon departure from Liverpool Lime Street, the “Flying Scouseman” needed another 20 miles to hit the two million mark.

The magic number came up as it approached Crewe on its way to London Euston.

The train then spent half an hour in the capital before heading the 09:30 service to Glasgow. After a short break there, the train returned to London Euston, before going back home to Liverpool to complete its 16-hour day, and put a further 1190 miles under its belt.

In its first two million miles, ‘Flying Scouseman’ has performed 8,887 services with Avanti West Coast, travelling up and down the West Coast Main Line.

Avanti West Coast returned 56 Pedolinos to service in June 2024 following a £117m investment programme which transformed the passenger experience with better seats, the introduction of a new onboard shop, improved lighting and new interior carpets

The trains also received customer-friendly passenger information screens, additional luggage space, power points at every seat and refurbished toilets.

The Pendolino is an Italian family of high-speed tilting trains. By tilting, the trains can go faster around curves, designed in the past for slower trains, without causing undue discomfort to passengers.

Flying Scouseman has proudly been flying the flag for Liverpool, and travelled the equivalent of more than eight times to the moon and back.

The Pendolino is an iconic train, and Flying Scouseman is now better than before, offering customers a much-improved travel experience following its refurbishment.
