is testing new tinted window films on trains.

With the heightened sun this summer, the train operator is hoping to save energy and reduce diesel consumption.

The tinted windows block 99.9% of UV rays and more than 30% of solar energy, reducing the use of air conditioning.

As well as saving energy, this will also make train journeys cooler and more comfortable for passengers.

You can see them fitting the tints on windows in the video below.

The trialling of these tints will run over 6 months, testing different types in a TPE to see how they hold up in summer heat and winters cool temperatures.

“This could be a gamechanger in hot weather conditions, reducing glare from the sun and reducing energy needed by the air con to cool down our customers.

“We are committed to having a positive impact on the – and this is one of the many schemes across our network that aims to do just that.

“We recommend customers to stay hydrated, carry water with them and always check before they travel during hot weather.”

Nicola Martin, Head of Sustainability at TPE
