The Severn Valley Railway is celebrating the first century of one of its locomotives.
Visitors to the railway will get to be part of the long awaited celebrations as they wish No 4566 a happy birthday.
The locomotive is a small prairie tank engine, and was built in 1924 at Swindon Works. The loco has previously hauled both freight and passenger services until it was withdrawn in the early 1960’s.
4566 is currently on static display at the Engine House in Highley, with fund raising underway to overhaul the locomotive and return it to service.
The locomotive’s Preservation Group is holding a country fete-style event across the 30th August until the 1st September.
There will be games, competitions and activities going on in celebration. Additionally, there will be footplate rides on the 30th from Bewdley.

‘We want to celebrate 4566’s 100th birthday in grand style, and we thought a summer fete would be very fitting. There’ll be a party atmosphere, with art competitions, a magic show (Saturday only), classic games and activities, a raffle and tombola, opportunities to chat with group members, and of course things wouldn’t be complete without a special birthday cake!
‘This year, we’re really ramping up our fundraising efforts, and hope to raise £100,000. Our ambition is to return this splendid locomotive to service on the SVR, and to preserve its legacy for future generations.’
