GB Railfreight aims to reduce carbon emissions in the UK Supply Chains by acquiring 4 Class 18 Shunt Locomotives amongst other initiatives.
Clayton Equipment Ltd builds the four Class 18s and will be based at various GBRF sites across the UK to support Supply Chain Operations for Network Rail, which will help to keep the network operational and most importantly, safe.
Powered by an onboard battery, the locos can be charged by an electric supply or its regenerative braking system alongside an EU Stage V Diesel engine.
Other methods GBRF are using for its decarbonisation strategy are the ordering of 33 Class 99 Hybrid Locomotives, having all their sites powered by renewable energy, and switching their van fleet that moves staff from location to location from fossil fuels to electric.
The Class 18 hybrid+ shunt locomotives are another exciting step forward for GB Railfreight in modernising and decarbonising our business. By utilising them on SCO services, we’re making sure our partnership delivers a greener, more sustainable railway that works better for everyone.
