Marcia, a 101-year-old steam locomotive, is set to return to the with new owners.

Originally, the locomotive was donated to the Kent and East Sussex Railway but was then sold to KESR member, Richard Beckett.

Sadly, Richard passed away in 2023 and the loco was offered for sale through GW Railwayana Auctions and Berrybrook Steam and Classics in Exeter.

Thankfully, KESR driver Andy Hardy and purchased the locomotive in June 2024.

The Kent and East Sussex Railway and Rapido Trains UK have already worked together, including sponsoring the visit of 31806 to the KESR for their Anniversary Gala.

It is planned that Marcia will return to Rolvenden in the next few weeks, where a boiler exam and minor work can take place before the locomotive re-enters traffic.

A number of opportunities have been recognised for the locomotive, including educational, community and sustainability goals that the KESR are keen to develop.

It is also planned that the locomotive will be made available to other railways to hire, with a new website set to be designed.

“Owning a locomotive has always been a dream and one that I thought I would never realise. Having enjoyed regularly driving Marcia’s sister Teddy in the past I knew just how much fun Marcia could be, and the opportunity to purchase Marcia and bring her back to the K&ESR was one that couldn’t be missed.”

Andy Hardy

“Helping Andy realise a dream is a delight and and honour. While my personal interests are in oily things that thrash, Andy’s enthusiasm and drive for steam is obvious and we look forward to seeing Marcia return to her home of the last 61 years.”

Jason Shron, owner of Rapido Trains

“In moments of great decision, we must often pause and reflect on the broader implications of our actions. Just as great leaders have inspired change through vision and unity, we are now presented with an opportunity that extends beyond the immediate and tangible. The proposal to bring Marcia back to the Kent & East Sussex Railway is not merely about acquiring a locomotive; it is about forging a strategic partnership that aligns with our long-term goals, enhances our community and educational engagement, and secures our future sustainability. Marcia is coming home, not just as a locomotive, but as a symbol of our commitment to heritage, innovation, and community.”

Robin Coombes, General Manager of the KESR

    1. If they can introduce the fireless engines & the S160s in to OO, I can’t see why Marcia won’t make her debut in OO
