Alstom, in collaboration with the Danish national railway operator DSB, has been awarded the prestigious “Red Dot Award” 2024 for design excellence” for its IC5 Coradia Stream train.
As one of the world’s largest design competitions, the Red Dot Design Award celebrates excellence in international design, product design, communication design, and a variety of design concepts.
The Red Dot Award Ceremony will take place in Germany next Monday, 24th June.
In 2021, Alstom signed a historic landmark framework agreement with DSB worth €2.6 billion to supply 100 of the Coradia Stream trains and 15 years for their full-service maintenance.
Developed in a close and innovative partnership between Alstom and DSB, the IC5 Coradia reflects the values and meets the needs of the Danish people, embodying both integrity and authenticity.
They have five carriages with 300 seats, have low entry for easy access, good storage areas for bicycles and prams, and more luggage storage areas than the existing trains.
Externally, the IC5 Coradia Stream has clean, functional shapes and colours, with an aerodynamic front end. They are painted in the bold DSB-red livery, with a black band integrating window heights, and light grey external doors.
The design enhances driving comfort, reduces energy consumption, increases stability, and ensures passenger safety through controlled shock absorption.
The interiors incorporate natural materials such as genuine wood and raw metal that result in a timeless design with a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the interior lighting has different brightness levels and harmonious colour combinations.
Passenger areas are spacious and bright with high-quality materials, comfortable seats, individual facilities, a self-service area, and an advanced passenger information system. The trains have been designed to meet full accessibility requirements.
With a maximum speed of 200 km/hr, IC5 Coradia Stream trains are well-suited to meet the requirements of the Danish rail network and take full advantage of the country’s major infrastructure projects such as electrification and new signalling.
The IC5 trains will replace the IC3, IC4, IR4 and Øresund trains, which will be gradually phased out, and will operate on both high-speed, intercity and regional trains.
