Network Rail engineers have installed two new lifts to Bridlington station’s historic footbridge to provide passengers at the station in East Yorkshire with step-free access to platforms 4, 5 and 6.
As well as making the accessibility improvements, the bridge has also been given a new lease of life with Network Rail engineers replacing the bridge deck and strengthening its wider structure.
Together, the work should protect the bridge for years to come.
The work was part of a £5 million project to make it easier for people with reduced mobility, pushchairs, bicycles, or heavy luggage to transfer between platform 4 and platforms 5 and 6.
In 2019, a £2.5 million project transformed the entrance to Bridlington station as part of town’s regeneration plans.
As well as providing an attractive new pedestrian area in front of the station, a new car park was provided and a new exit road joined up with the entrance road to Tesco on Hilderthorpe Road.
In front of the station, a new landscaped pedestrian area was laid out with high-quality stone paving, new lighting, trees, and benches.
Three years ago, the signalling system at Bridlington was completely upgraded when the 65-lever mechanical signalling frame in Bridlington South signal box was replaced by an electronic control panel, mechanical signals next to the track were replaced with modern colour-light ones, and 1.2 km of track was replaced.
It’s brilliant that we have been able to provide an improved and more accessible route between platforms at Bridlington station. The work that has been completed will greatly enhance the experience of passengers and make it easier for them to navigate the station.
This project has not been without its challenges, and I want to thank passengers for their patience while we carried out this vital work.
I hope that the improvements we have made will now allow more people to travel easily by train and enjoy the beautiful Bridlington coastline with a side order of fish and chips!

And while they are basking in plaudits, they could remind York station to repair the lifts leading to and from the underpass between platforms at York station . Or at least remind LNER about the problem. Lugging heavy suitcases over the footbridge is no joke. Lifts have been broken for weeks and weeks.
