Opened in 1999, the Jubilee Line extension connects the north and east of the capital city.

Running from Green Park to Stratford, it includes 11 stations and passes through south and east London, including Waterloo, Southwark and the financial hub of Canary Wharf.

The Jubilee Line first opened in May 1979, and at that time ran between Stanmore and Charing Cross.

Work on the construction of the extension to Stratford commenced in 1993 and it became operational in three staggered phases over the course of 1999, opening in time for the launch of the Millennium Dome, near the line’s North Greenwich station.

The stations on the extension were designed by a team under the guidance of Roland Paoletti, a British-Italian architect who has had also worked on stations for Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway.

Canada Water is often seen as a typical example of the ‘future-proof’ stations. It boasts tall glass walls which let sunlight from outside shine through the building to the platforms.

All 11 of the stations offer fully step-free access, and currently around one third of the stations on the TfL network are step-free, a proportion which TfL is working to increase, partly through the use of mini-ramps.

In order to celebrate the extension’s 25th anniversary, TfL has created special information posters which it will be displaying at stations along the line in the near future.

The Jubilee line extension was a remarkable feat that changed the geography of our city as we saw in the new millennium. Creating a fast, reliable connection between the West End and the thriving Docklands area brought significant economic rewards for the city and more homes for thousands of Londoners. The extension also helped to lay the foundation for our ongoing accessibility work to ensure all Londoners can make the most of what our city has to offer.

The Mayor and TfL continue to develop our world-class transport offer, in the past few years completing the Elizabeth line, Northern line extensions and installing 4G across the network.”

Passengers will be able to spot Jubilee line 25-year anniversary posters at stations across the Tube network over the coming weeks.
