On Saturday 9 June, a restored 1938 burgundy London Underground train will run across central London on the Piccadilly line from Acton Town station in West London to Oakwood station in North London.

Tickets are now on sale for the event.

It will be the first of four London Underground Heritage Train Journeys events taking place in the months of June, July, August and September this year.

Each will involve the popular 1938 Art Deco-style train, which ran on London Underground for longer than many other trains.

The 1938 stock train was the first deep-level Tube train to have all its electrical equipment under the floor, and combined the latest technology with late 1930s style.

The trains served London for half a century, running on several deep-level Tube lines.

This carefully-restored electric train has four cars with green and red moquette seating, grab handles and distinctive Art Deco light fittings.

Some events will include actors in costume from past times, craft workshops, souvenir booklets, a stall with transport collectibles stall or a busker.

Transport for London is advising potential guests that the 1938 stock Art Deco-style train runs on a live, operational transport system, and that the dates and times of the Heritage Train Journeys events are subject to change.

This summer’s events

The four events are as follows:

Piccadilly Sunday Special, Heritage Train Journeys, Sunday 9 June

Passengers will travel from Acton Town station along the central London section of the Piccadilly line to Oakwood station, with the journey taking around fifty minutes. Passengers may also book single tickets for the return journey from Oakwood station to Acton Town station.

At Oakwood, there will be a talk about the architect Charles Holden and his innovative station design, which played a significant role in shaping London’s appearance.

At Acton Town station, visitors will have the opportunity to buy transport collectibles at a stall run by the London Transport Museum Friends. Guests will receive a souvenir booklet.

Summer Special, Heritage Train Journeys, Saturday 20 July – Sunday 21 July 2024

Last year, London Underground celebrated its 160th birthday.

Since the world’s first underground railway opened in 1863, the Tube has become an iconic part of London life for Londoners and visitors.

At the turn of the twentieth century, the fast-growing capital city needed its transport network to grow as well.

This Summer Special event celebrates the 120th anniversary of the Metropolitan Line being extended from Harrow-on-the-Hill station to Uxbridge.

Special trips will run between Uxbridge and Harrow-on-the Hill. Guests will receive a souvenir booklet and meet a costumed actor playing the role of Charles Holden, a pioneer in station architecture who designed Acton Town and Uxbridge stations. A London Underground busker will entertain visitors.

Heritage Train Journeys: The Heathrow Loop, Saturday 10 August – Sunday 11 August 2024

Guests are invited to enjoy a trip on a historic vehicle as modern-day aircraft fly above them on the Piccadilly line.

Day trippers can buy transport collectibles at a London Transport Museum Friends stall at a west London station where they will board and leave the train.

Families can drop in and take part in craft activity before boarding the train. Guests will receive a souvenir booklet.

Heritage Train Journeys: Amersham Special, Saturday 7 September – Sunday 8 September 2024

The final Heritage Train Journeys event of the season will take place at the same time as the annual Amersham Heritage Day to be held in Amersham town on the Sunday 8 September 2024.

Journeys will begin at Amersham station on the Metropolitan line, but the exact route has not yet been confirmed. Guests will receive a souvenir booklet to remember.

London Transport Museum’s website will publish further details about the programme to accompany the Heritage Train Journeys event.
