The North Norfolk Railway is to hold an Open Day on Saturday 27th April in an attempt to inspire a new era of volunteers to join the railway.
The five and a half mile line that runs from the Victorian town of Sheringham to the Georgian town of Holt offers regular steam and diesel trains, using a variety of period coaching stock and goods wagons.
Besides this, the railway puts on many special events and a range of dining experiences throughout the year, as the line runs through some of north Norfolk‘s stunning scenery, which includes views of the sea from the train.
The line is a year round operation even on days when trains are not running, as work and maintenance duties are still needed to be carried out.
The Poppy Line is largely run by volunteers, who give up their free time to keep heritage trains running for others to enjoy through their dedication and enthusiasm.
The Open Day gives a chance to those who have thought about working in a railway environment, the chance to visit, learn about and observe the operations, and to speak to members of staff about what it’s like to volunteer in a range roles and departments at a heritage railway.
“Each year, our brilliant team of volunteers get involved with almost every aspect of railway life. From the people assisting you on the platform and in our shops, to those driving our locomotives and maintaining carriages, our visitors will meet many of our volunteers when taking a trip on the Poppy Line!”
Volunteer Coordinator Laurie Ling
For those interested in going, a morning tour will start at 9:30am and will last until just after 12pm. You will be shown around much of the railway, where you will understand and observe firsthand about the range of duties and behind-the-scenes work that goes into running a heritage railway.
“Our volunteers have a variety of reasons for joining the railway. Sometimes people think they have to have a lot of railway-knowledge or experience elsewhere, and whilst some of our team are very passionate about heritage railway preservation, others want to learn new skills and keep active or are simply looking to meet new people.”
Volunteer Coordinator Laurie Ling
