has revealed the most popular websites accessed by its customers whilst travelling on-board its trains.

With free Wi-Fi available on its trains, Northern has revealed those most popular with its customers.

After customers’ devices have updated their time, date, and location settings, connected to virtual private networks (VPNs) the most popular websites are:

  1. Google
  2. Snapchat
  3. Whatsapp
  4. Instagram
  5. TikTok
  6. Spotify
  7. X (formerly Twitter)
  8. Facebook
  9. iTunes
  10. Gmail

Safe For All

Wi-Fi on Northern’s trains is delivered in partnership with the safe certification standard ‘Friendly WiFi’, which reassures users that the service meets minimum filtering standards.

That’s particularly relevant in areas where children may be present, such as in Northern’s stations and on-board its trains.

The ‘Friendly WiFi’ scheme is delivered in partnership with the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS), with Northern joining the scheme seven years ago in 2017.

One of the drawbacks of accessing the Internet in public places is the risk of being inadvertently to unsuitable content.

Last year, Northern issued an ‘NSFW’ content (Not Suitable For Work)’ warning to people that they should not view unsuitable content on its trains.

The warning was backed-up by an appropriate webpage advising people not to view such content on its trains, and to wait till they got home out of respect to other passengers.

Northern also has a number of special value tickets to provide savings on their travel costs. These include Duo Tickets that give a 25% discount on the standard fare when any two people travel together, with no requirement to produce a , and are available on hundreds of services every day.

If there is a group of travelling together, then Northern’s Group Tickets also offer valuable savings on the normal fares.

“One of the benefits of letting the train take the strain is that you’re free to relax and enjoy the journey.

“It’s clear our customers use the time on-board to keep in touch with friends via social media and other messaging apps as well as relax and listen to music.

“For those using the train to commute to work, the average journey time is 25 minutes in each direction – that’s 50 minutes a day they can use in a way that suits them rather than sitting in traffic behind the wheel of a car.”
