Passengers are being reminded buses will replace trains later this month as work gets underway on Rannoch Viaduct.
The work will take place from the 16th March until the 24th March.
Trains between Crianlarich to Fort William and Mallaig will be replaced by bus, with some service alterations.
Changes to trains between Glasgow Queen Street and Fort William / Mallaig
- Bus in operation between Crianlarich and Fort William and between Fort William and Mallaig
- Buses will connect Tulloch, Roy Bridge and Spean Bridge with Fort William
- No bus service will service Rannoch or Corrour
ScotRail is also taking the opportunity to remind passengers that services to Oban will run as normal and is unaffected by the work.
“While Network Rail undertake engineering works to Rannoch viaduct between 16 and 24 March, customers should be aware that ScotRail train services will be replaced with buses from Crianlarich to Fort William and Mallaig.
“During this time, customers travelling north of Crianlarich should note that journey times may take longer, and we encourage customers to check before they travel using the ScotRail website, app, or social media channels.
“We understand the disruption this will cause to customers’ journeys, but it is essential that Network Rail carries out these works, and we thank customers for their patience.”

Why can’t Network Rail stable some trains at Fort William before the viaduct is closed, so at least the Fort William to Mallaig service can still run? There is a maintenance depot at Fort William so I can see no reason why this can’t be done.
Network Rail seems far too ready to shut down quite large expanses of railway line when there is any upset, planned or otherwise. For example shutting the entire Workington to Carlisle line to carry out emergency repairs to the bridge over the River Derwent at Workington. They could have continued to run services from Maryport to Carlisle.
A very good point Chris, well put. I’d add that they could run the train as far as Corrour, as there are sidings there that will allow the train to return North. What we see here is management incompetence where it’s easier just to shut the lot & blind people with codswallop & hope no one with any clout notices. Third World Britain
