A consultation has opened into discontinuing some school buses to a West Yorkshire school, with pupils instead asked to take the train.

Ilkley Grammar School pupils who live in Menston and Burley-in-Wharfedale may see their school buses discontinued in a change that Bradford Council says would be more cost-effective and more sustainable.

Those who currently receive free travel to school will continue to do so, and future pupils will receive a railcard rather than a bus pass.

At peak times, there are four trains an hour on the Ilkley line, and Bradford Council says that there is enough capacity on these services to move pupils on to these and off the roads.

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said “The Local Authority recognises that any change to the current transport offer may result in unforeseen issues that may need addressing. It is important to ensure that all interested parties are given the opportunity to express their views for consideration and to this end, I am writing to Parents and Carers, Governors and Headteachers of all schools and in the locality to inform them of the proposals.”
