The iconic Volk’s Electric Railway at Brighton has been acclaimed as the ‘Railway of the Year’ at this year’s Heritage Railway Association‘s annual awards.
Volk’s is the world’s oldest operating electric railway and a pioneer in sustainable transportation. In this year’s awards, it was up against over 200 other heritage railways nationwide.
Volk’s Electric Railway award as the Railway of the Year was the Heritage Railway Association’s premier national accolade.
The ceremony held extra significance for the railway as it was held in its home city of Brighton.
The last year has been remarkably successful for the railway, and last August it celebrated its 140th Anniversary. Its recognition as Railway of the Year reflects its dedication to providing eco-friendly and efficient transport while preserving the rich history that is embedded in its rails.
Throughout its history, the railway has combined adapting to modern standards with maintaining its vintage charm, making it a standout contender for the Heritage Railway Association’s coveted award.
Don’t forget, RailAdvent Plus Annual members get up to 35% off when they show their membership card at the railway.
This year’s operating season for the Volk’s Electric Railway starts on Good Friday, 29 March for the Easter weekend. Full details can be found on the railway’s website by clicking here.
Councillor Alan Robins, Chair of the Culture, Heritage, Sport, Tourism & Economic Development Committee said: “The Volk’s Railway is truly a unique and important part of Brighton & Hove’s heritage and a much-loved attraction for residents and visitors alike.
“This win is fantastic news and a fitting tribute to the staff and volunteers who work so hard to keep the railway running.”
Reflecting on the achievement, James Barton, Manager of Volk’s Electric Railway, remarked: “Winning Railway of the Year is a tremendous honour and we’re absolutely thrilled to receive this recognition.
“I would like to thank our wonderful staff and volunteers whose passion and dedication are without parallel. I’d also like to thank all of our visitors.
“Their support not only upholds the legacy of our railway but also plays a pivotal role in preserving the rich history and charm that make Volk’s Electric Railway an integral part of Brighton’s cultural heritage.”
