£2.7m upgrade for Manchester railway station

has announced a £2.7m project at , which will help passengers as they travel through the city.

Work is set to begin next month with work taking place to redesign the front of the station, which is served by , , East Midlands Railway and .

Additionally, new ticket barriers are to be installed, with the ticket office moving to the front of the station building. A new accessible ticket barrier will also be installed for those with a wheelchair or pram.

Most of the work will be carried out overnight, commuters may see some construction activities, but the station will remain open.

Gaynor Quinn, sponsor for Network Rail, said: “I am pleased to announce the upgrades at Manchester Oxford Road station, as part of our commitment to improving passengers’ experience.

“The new ticket barriers and the relocation of the ticket windows will streamline passenger flow and create a more user-friendly environment for everyone.”

Craig Harrop, regional director at Northern said: “These improvements are set to make a huge difference for our colleagues and customers using Manchester Oxford Road station.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience while this work is carried out and we look forward to the finished result.”

  1. If the exercise is to spend this money to modernise the station, shouldn’t they think about adding mobile charging points…? The number of times my train has been delayed and my battery power has virtually died, then panic sets in as my digital ticket is on my phone. This essential service should be supplied as a “duty of care”.

  2. Manchester Oxford Road is a modern architectural gem which has not been looked after. It needs a spring clean and maintenance but nothing should affect its creativity in wood.

    1. Oxford Rd might be an architectural gem, but it is utterly unfit for purpose as a railway station. It needs bulldozing and something useful building in it’s place.

  3. Millions spent on the station with an increase in the price of a cup of coffee whilst the track to and from the station deteriores unchecked . That’s how network fail does it.

    1. Good to see investment at stations.
      Spare a thought for some of the smaller stations.
      At Alderley Edge we had a platform canopy removed and it’s not been replaced . The building it was supported by has been left to rot. The customer experience on the Crewe bound platform has actually got worse .
      Network Rail tell me there’s no funding available to repair the dilapidated building and no replacement canopy is planned.

    2. Is this the trade off for not adding platforms 15 and 16 at Piccadilly?

      Congestion in the north will never be overcome until this issue is addressed.

  4. New ticket barriers and relocation of the ticket office. Is that it?
    This mainline station, along with Piccadilly Gardens is a disgrace to the city. What visitors think when they arrive in Manchester, I dread to think. I use this station regularly and I am appalled when I see the weeds, broken concrete slabs and detritus on the ground across from the platform. The area looks like a semi-derelict builder’s yard.
    £2.7 million is an insulting amount when you consider that St Pancras had £1.6 billion in funding. Yet another example of the North/South divide!
