The Nene Valley Railway (NVR) in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, has announced that A1 No. 60163 Tornado will visit over the Easter weekend.
The loco is celebrating its return to steam following its overhaul, which has taken more than two years.
Tornado will operate at NVR from Thursday 28 March (the day before Good Friday) until Tuesday 2 April, the day after Easter Monday, and will haul these services:
- Tornado Driving Experience courses, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 March
- The Fenman Evening Fish and Chip Train, Saturday 30 March
- Tornado Passenger Services, Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March
- East Coast Freight Storm Photographic Charter, Tuesday 2 April
Tornado is a 4-6-2 steam locomotive, and when completed in 2008 was the first new-build British mainline steam locomotive built since 1960. It is the only Peppercorn Class A1 in existence after the original batch was scrapped, and was built to an original design by Arthur Peppercorn..
Tornado’s visit to the Nene Valley Railway has been made possible with kind thanks to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust.
RailAdvent’s online shop stocks several 60163 products, including nine prints, five mouse mats, a Blu-Ray and a greetings card.

I was hoping to see Tornado at the G.C. following its overhaul. Although the line is of a similar length to the Nene Valley, it is passed for 60mph running for high speed trials prior to a return to the main line. Here’s hoping anyway!
Where is Tornado at the moment like where as it been overhauled?
Tornado was being rebuilt at Loughborough. It’s good to see she has a new boiler certificate and is ship shape ready for work again. I’m not sure whether the A1 trust are also based there. Not sure where she’s kept during Railtours though, that could be dependent on route and destination. She may be either left at Loughborough until closer to the time before travelling to the NVR ahead of her first public event.
It will be great to see her on the tracks again
