Siemens awards $157m brake system order for Indian Railways to Wabtec

Wabtec Corporation, the international rail technology company, has landed a $157m (£123m) order from the mobility business of Siemens Private Ltd.

, which has its headquarters in the USA but operates in 50 countries around the globe, will be supplying brake systems for 9000HP locomotive for Indian Railways.

Employing the latest technology, the new line of 1,200 electric locomotives will use the Wabtec components to provide improved operating performance and excellent reliability, along with efficiency and improved safety. The high-performance brake system will also require reduced maintenance intervals.

, as well as projects around the country, already use Wabtec products.

The company’s Indian transit business is capable of building major subsystems, including not only brake systems but also pantographs, couplers, air-conditioning systems and passenger access doors. They have a large engineering presence in Hosur and Bangalore can provide technical and service support. The new order will see Wabtec supplying with brake systems from the Hosur plant for 11 years and maintenance services for 35 years. Siemens will assemble the locomotives at the Indian Railways factory in Dahod, in the state of Gujarat, India.
