Volunteers at Poppleton station have restored two benches that pay tribute to former railway workers.

The benches bear plaques commemorating signallers who worked close to the station, but had rotten and become worn since being installed four decades ago.

A team of five volunteers from the Friends of Poppleton Station have saved the historic memorials with the help of property management service ISS, installing two new benches that now bear the original plaques.

Poppleton is located just over two miles west of York and is on the Harrogate Line, which runs between Leeds and York via Harrogate. The station serves the villages of Nether Poppleton and Upper Poppleton, which are within the boundaries of the City of York. It is unstaffed, and has step-free access between the platforms via a level crossing.

Kerry Peters, regional director at Northern, said: “It is important that we cherish heritage assets like these, and I am so pleased they have been given a new lease of life.

“I’d like to thank our volunteers for their hard work on this project and for the hours they spend looking after Poppleton station.”
