ScotRail has issued travel advice to customers to only travel if it is essential to do so for a number of routes across the central belt from Monday the 29th of January to Thursday the 1st of February as Network Rail carries out safety critical engineering work.

The essential project will see the installation of a specialised netting system which will be situated on a rock cutting over the railway to prevent possible rockfalls.

The project will mean significant disruption for rail customers on the following routes:

  • Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk High will see services terminate at Linlithgow:
  • No train services will operate between Edinburgh Waverley and Linlithgow
  • Limited rail replacement buses will be in operation between Linlithgow and station,
  • Ticket acceptance will be in operation with Edinburgh Trams for those travelling between Edinburgh Park and and Waverley.
  • Dunblane to Edinburgh services will terminate at Falkirk Grahamston:
  • No train services will operate between Edinburgh Waverley and Falkirk Grahamston.
  • Limited rail replacement buses will be operating between Falkirk Grahamston and Edinburgh Park station
  • Ticket acceptance will be in operation with Edinburgh Trams for those travelling between Edinburgh Park and Haymarket and Waverley.
  • Edinburgh to Helensburgh/Milngavie services will terminate at Bathgate:
  • No train services will operate between Edinburgh Waverley and Bathgate.
  • Limited rail replacement buses will be in operation between Bathgate and Edinburgh Park, calling at Livingstone North and Uphall

Customers should note that travel times between Linlithgow and Bathgate, both to and from Edinburgh, will be a minimum of 40 minutes longer on the rail replacement bus to Edinburgh Park and the onward journey via Edinburgh Trams to the city centre.

Local bus services will also be available during the period of work however, rail ticket acceptance will not be in operation and capacity could be limited. ScotRail customers who wish to use local bus services need to buy tickets directly from the bus operator they will use:

  • McGill’s:
  • X38 service between Stirling-Falkirk--Linlithgow-Edinburgh.
  • Citylink:
  • 900 service between Glasgow-Edinburgh.
  • 902 service Glasgow-Livingston-Edinburgh Airport.

  • Edinburgh – Glasgow via .

Customers should be aware that additional capacity will be limited and journey time approximately 30 to 50 minutes longer than the usual service via Falkirk High:

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said:

“There will be significant disruption to the services ScotRail can operate between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Bathgate, Linlithgow, Stirling, and Inverness.”

“ScotRail’s advice to customers travelling between Edinburgh and Glasgow via Falkirk High or via Bathgate, and between Edinburgh and Dunblane, is that you should only travel if your journey is essential.”

“Customers travelling between Inverness and Edinburgh should also be aware that journey times will may be longer as those services are diverted via Fife, and will not call at Stirling.”

“We understand the disruption this will cause to customers journeys, but it is essential that Network Rail carries out these works. We thank customers for their patience.”
