Scotrail to run extra services and longer trains up to Christmas

To provide a better service to its customers during the festive season, is putting on additional trains and adding extra carriages to others in the run up to Christmas.

Extra carriages will be added to trains throughout Scotland throughout the week until Christmas, and add extra late-night trains on Fridays 1, 8, 15, and 22 December on the following routes:

  • to Dalmuir via Glasgow Central Low Level;
  • Dalmuir to Motherwell and Dalmuir to Larkhall via Glasgow Central Low Level;
  • Larkhall to Milngavie via Glasgow Central Low Level;
  • Milngavie to Motherwell via Glasgow Central Low Level;
  • Glasgow Central to:
    • Motherwell:
    • Newton ();
    • ;
    • Edinburgh Waverley via Shotts;
    • Paisley Canal;
    • Kilmarnock;
    • East Kilbride;
  • Glasgow Central to Glasgow Central via the Cathcart Circle.

Boxing Day trains have been normally been restricted to a few services mainly in the Strathclyde area. This year, there will trains to and from Perth, Dunblane, and Glenrothes, and between Bathgate and Edinburgh, and additional trains from:

  • Bathgate to Edinburgh Waverley;
  • Glasgow Queen Street to ;
  • Edinburgh Waverley to Dunblane;
  • Edinburgh Waverley to Glenrothes with Thornton via Dunfermline;
  • Edinburgh Waverley to Perth via Kirkcaldy.

During the Christmas and New Year period there will be changes to train times and on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve the last trains of the day will depart earlier than normal, with services winding down from around 7 pm.

Anyone intending to travel on Christmas Eve and New Year s Eve during the Christmas and New Year period are advised to check their travel details on the ScotRail website. Customers are also advised that in line with other UK train operators ScotRail is introducing a new timetable on Sunday, 10 December.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: “We know how important this time of year is for people, and we are delighted to be able to provide more carriages and extra services right through the Christmas period.

“Whether it’s shopping trips or nights out, customers can travel for less this Christmas with off-peak fares all day, every day.
We’re encouraging everyone to plan ahead and check their journey on ScotRail app or website before they set off as there may be minor changes to some train times. This includes the last trains on Christmas Eve and New Year s Day departing earlier than usual.”
