To add extra rail capacity to its network and provide access to Canada‘s Rocky Mountains, Western provinces, and Pacific Northwest regions, Cando Rail & Terminals has acquired Transmark, which is a first-class private rail storage facility at Lethbridge in Southwest Alberta.
Cando is a Canadian specialist rail operating and terminal infrastructure company, and with the acquisition, its clients now have a unit train staging and storage location at a strategic site in Southwest Alberta, with the advantage of having on-site first-class railcar repair shops.
The Lethbridge terminal currently has a capacity for 1,700 railcars, and can provide staging and storage of railcars seven days a week. It is also large enough to provide unit-train storage as well as numerous other services such as windmill transloading and mechanical services. The change of ownership will have no effect on staff and operations as all existing Transmark employees are being retained and terminal operations will continue as normal.
With the acquisition of Transmark, Cando now owns 12 rail terminals and one short line railway, and has the capacity to stage and store over 10,000 railcars.
Cando’s business model enables industrial shippers to optimise their supply chains and connect to Class 1 railways by taking advantage of Cando’s operating capabilities and network of multi-purpose rail terminals. Among its range of services are short line operations, industrial switching, material handling, terminal and transload services, railcar staging, train assembly, and related services.
A few weeks ago, Cando was honoured with a 2023 RAC Safety and Environment Award by the Railway Association of Canada (RAC).
Brian Cornick, President & CEO of Cando, said “Transmark was the perfect fit for Cando. The company shares a commitment to customer service, safety, and providing innovative solutions – the same values that have defined Cando since 1978.
“The terminal will allow us to expand our nation-wide logistics planning network, thereby enabling greater movement of Canada’s goods and resources in a key transportation corridor.”
“Cando’s investment will increase market access and allow facilities in Southern Alberta and across its network to concentrate on their core business, while partnering with Cando to access increased transportation and logistics solutions. The investment marks a major milestone for Cando as the company’s first terminal acquisition.
“The acquisition of our newest terminal in Southern Alberta is a defining moment for Cando Rail & Terminals. It signals a new era of growth for Cando. Strategic acquisitions such as this allow us to grow our terminal network across Canada and into the United States to better serve our clients.”
