Alstom, the global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a contract worth €3 million with the Hungarian company MÁV-Vagon for the overhaul of the bogie frames of 25 Traxx electric locomotives that are part of its MÁV-START fleet.

By overhauling the bogie frames, MÁV-Vagon aims to improve the quality and reliability of its rolling stock, and increase their safety and efficiency of rail transport. It is expected that the project to overhaul the bogie frames for 25 Traxx electric locomotives will take three years.

Two companies will jointly carry out the overhauls. MÁV-VAGON will be responsible for the refurbishing, the bogies and dismantling and reassembling the gears, while Alstom will be responsible for overhauling the engines, and supplying new axles and wheelsets.

The work will be programmed so that the locomotives are worked on in sequence, so that when one overhaul is completed, the next one will be taken into works. MÁV VAGON will dismantle, re-assemble, and commission the bogies at its headquarters at Szolnok in central Hungary, while Alstom will overhaul the engines at its factory at Hennigsdorf in Germany.

The first engines to be overhauled by Alstom left Szolnok last Monday, December 12, and after repairs and testing they are scheduled to be delivered back to Szolnok in the first three months of next year ready for installation in the renovated bogies.

Although the Traxx locomotives are the newest electric locomotives in the MÁV-START fleet, they have already clocked up a total of more than 60 million kilometres in service.
