Facilities at Meadowhall station in Sheffield have been enhanced with the provision of a new cycle hub.
The new hub provides a new secure and dry space where cyclists can leave their bicycles at the busy Northern station, which is also an interchange with Sheffield’s Supertram light rail network, intercity coach services and the city’s bus network.
There are spaces for 40 bicycles at the new cycle hub which is located in the station’s car park, and can also accommodate adapted bikes or cargo bikes. Funding to construct the hub came from the Cycle Rail Fund, and it is operated by Sheffield-based company Russell’s Bicycle Shed.
As well as providing space to securely park bicycles, a maintenance stand complete with tools and a tyre pump allows minor maintenance to be carried out. There is a charge of £5 per month to use the hub, which is equipped with CCTV cameras to ensure maximum security there, whilst entry to the hub is via a secure door entry system that is enabled through a smartphone app.
Applications to use the new hub can be made online at https://www.russellsbicycleshed.co.uk/secure-cycle-parking
Kerry Peters, regional director at Northern, said: “We’re pleased to announce the opening of the new cycle hub, we feel that the opportunity for cyclists to safely park their bikes in the facility will help reduce car traffic on the roads and encourage people to cycle to our stations.”
