Network Rail has begun work on the new building at Troon station in Ayrshire.
Siobhian Brown, the Member of the Scottish Parliament for Ayr, joined Network Rail‘s project manager, Louise McSmith, to mark the start of efforts to restore the canopies and platform 1 building, which were destroyed in a fire in 2021.
After the fire, ScotRail assessed the damage, and Network Rail worked with others to develop a design for the reconstructed building, presenting three options for consultation in August last year. In July this year, Network Rail awarded the contract for the rebuilding to AmcoGiffen.
Work was completed last month to install the seven replacement canopies, and since then, preparations have been made for the start of work on the main building.
The next phase of work on the platform one building will see it rebuilt to include a ticket office, waiting area, and ‘changing places‘ facility for disabled people and their carers.
Network Rail hopes that the work will be completed in time for The Open golf tournament being held in Troon in July 2024.
Siobhian Brown said: “It is fantastic to be here today to meet the site team and mark the beginning of the station building reconstruction.
“The community have bought-in to the design of the new building – which is in keeping with the historic character of the station while offering improved facilities for people travelling to and from Troon.
“I look forward to following the work and visiting again to see progress as the project team works toward completing the project ahead of next year’s Open golf.”
Louise McSmith, Network Rail’s project manager for the Troon station redevelopment said: “The interest from the community in the work at the station has been great and we are delighted to have developed a design which has been widely supported.
“With the new canopies already in place, it’s great to get on site and focus on the main building element of the project. We’re excited to be working towards delivering a new and improved facility for people using Troon station.”
