Whitley Bay Metro station will see the restoration of its historic canopy get back underway following the appointment of one of the UK’s leading construction companies, Kier Group, to complete the project for Nexus, which owns and operates Metro.

The £5.3m project will see the Grade II listed structure, which dates back to the Edwardian period, undergo a full restoration, including:

• The replacement of glazing in the canopy with a modern robust alternative
• Strengthening and repainting of steelwork.

Glazing located over the Metro track will also be reinstated, which will support an improved sheltered environment for customers.

Throughout the period of work, Whitley Bay Metro station will remain open to customers as usual.
