The latest group of apprentices to be recruited by TransPennine Express (TPE) have just started their training.
This is the ninth year that TransPennine Express has recruited apprentices to its business, providing them with training in the different departments that are required for the railway to operate, including Performance, Human Resources, and Customer Experience. This year, for the first time, an apprentice has also been recruited to the company’s Sustainability team.
During the next two years, besides gaining experience in their chosen areas, where they will work with experts in the field., they will also find out about other departments within TransPennine Express to provide them with a wide breadth of experience that will show them what is needed to keep trains running in northern England and Scotland.
Since 2021, nearly 70% of TransPennine’s apprentices have found permanent employment within the company. Last year’s intake are now working in Train Planning, Revenue Protection, and Workforce Planning.
Emma Sayers-Bates, Talent and Development Manager at TPE, said: “It’s amazing to welcome another group of apprentices to the business, growing our teams with even more fresh talent. The apprentices will be getting stuck in during an exciting time for the business.
“This is a brilliant group of young apprentices, who have already shown their passion for the industry, and throughout the next two years will develop the skills they need to succeed. Within TransPennine Express we know how important it is for young talent to be introduced to rail, equipping them with the knowledge that will help them build an incredible career.”
Lucy Lightbown, Sustainability Apprentice at TPE, said: “When I finished college, I knew that University was not the right option for me. I have a real passion for the environment, so when I heard about the apprenticeship opening at TPE it seemed like the perfect fit for me.
“This scheme will allow me to earn whilst I learn and make a positive impact on the environment at the same time!
Jake Shore, Service Planning Apprentice for TPE, said: “I’ve always had a passion for rail and been on the lookout for a role within the industry. I’m really looking forward to working for TPE as it’s a great opportunity to gain new skills and a qualification whilst getting some hands-on work experience.”
