Pop Blue came into use in 2018, aiming to make Metro travel more affordable for 16-18-year-olds. Earlier this year, eligibility for the card was extended to include people aged up to 21.

Over twenty-seven thousand young people have taken out Pop Blue cards since and make nearly 130,000 Pop Blue journeys every month. 85% of 16–18-year-olds use a Pop Blue card when they travel on the Metro.

Anyone aged 21 and under will pay one pound for a single trip when they use a Pop Blue card. The cards can be topped up online and at Metro ticket machines.

The card is free but must be bought with a minimum £5 credit.

Customer Services Director at Nexus, Huw Lewis said: “Young people continue to enjoy excellent value and flexibility with a Pop Blue smartcard, which has generated an extra 2.3 million trips on Metro since it was introduced.

“Pop Blue lets young people take a single journey on Metro for £1 and as much as they want all day for £2.20. It’s easy to use, customers don’t have to commit to any regular travel, it’s contactless and better value than using ticket machines.

“Pop Blue is part of our family of great value smart cards and discounts for young people aged 21 and under on Metro. You can find the right card for you or your children and start saving right away – and don’t forget that children aged 11 and under travel free with a fare paying adult all day, every day.”
