A £93.4 million contract to construct a new railway station at Cambridge South has been awarded to J Murphy & Sons Ltd.

On 5 June the Rail Minister announced that the government would fund the construction of the station, which will be a two-storey four-platform station situated on the West Anglia Main next to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Facilities to be provided include:

• ticket vending machines;
• lifts to provide step-free access to all platforms;
• accessible toilets and baby change facilities;
• waiting area;
• space for retail/catering;

Other work will include:

• 1,000 cycle parking spaces;
• access for pedestrians and cyclists from both sides of the railway;
• modifying road layouts and crossings to improve access to the station.

Contractors J Murphy & Sons Ltd. will all work with Network Rail’s integrated delivery partners, Alstom and South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA), to modify and enhance the rail infrastructure to support the new station, including:

• remodelling the existing track layout;
• installing two additional track loops to accommodate a four-platform station;
• upgrading Shepreth Branch Junction;
• modifying the railway’s southern approach to Cambridge station;
• making provision for overhead line electrification infrastructure and a substation;
• modifying existing signalling equipment;
• stopping up two private level crossings and providing alternative access.

Enabling works have already started with the establishment of a worksite compound, installation of overhead line masts, and construction of the front walls of the platforms. Completion of the new station is currently planned for 2025.
