A mural at Salford Central railway station that depicts some of Northern’s fleet of trains has been updated to show examples of its latest diesel and electric fleet.
The mural previously showed Northern’s Class 142 diesel multiple unit and Class 319 electric multiple unit trains. Those have now been replaced in service by Class 195 diesel and Class 331 electric trains, so the decision was taken that the mural should be updated to reflect the current fleet.
Northern and Transport for Greater Manchester commissioned renowned Manchester-born street artists Tony Brady, who is also known as kELzO, and Evan Barlow to repaint the mural, which took them about 20 hours to complete. Evan Barlow was the artist who created the original mural.
In the early 1990s, street artist Tony Brady gained notoriety when, as kELzO, he turned the Hulme, an inner-city area of Manchester, into one of Europe’s largest outdoor street art galleries. Since then, Tony has appeared in many international publications and has won commissions to design sets for a host of television and film productions.
In 2019, 101 brand-new Class 195 diesel and Class 331 electric trains were brought into service by Northern. They all have air-conditioning, at-seat power sockets, free Wi-Fi, and customer information screens that display real-time information. In addition, they are also fully accessible and more spacious, with spaces for wheelchairs, pushchairs, and bicycles.
Earlier this year, Northern commissioned a 50-metre long sculpture at Halifax station in West Yorkshire that depicts the town’s culture, history and wildlife, while last year Northern also commissioned murals at Halifax station as part of the 231st Birthday Festival for the English diarist, Anne Lister, who was born in the town
Craig Harrop, regional director at Northern said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to the very talented Tony and Evan, the new mural really brightens up platform one and shows off our newest trains – of which we are very proud.”
