Proposals for Hairmyres and East Kilbride stations will be revealed to residents by Network Rail at a public engagement and will take place prior to application for Prior Approval Notice being made to South Lanarkshire Council.
The event will take place on Wednesday the 11th of October from 1pm to 5pm at the Plaza Mall outside Costa Coffee in the EK Shopping Centre.
The project comes as part of the £139.8m East Kilbride Enhancement project and forms part of the Scottish Government’s bid to decarbonise Scotland’s Railway.
The proposals feature:
- Relocation of Hairmyres station to a site off of Redwood Avenue, 600m west of its current location
- Extending Hairmyres track loop by 1.4km to create improved operational resilience during disruption alongside supporting increased services into the future
- Installation of a second platform at the site of the new station
- A new accessible building at East Kilbride station
The new site for Hairmyres station has been in collaboration with South Lanarkshire Council and will create an improved transport interchange hub offering more car parking, including accessible parking, EV charging spaces and secure cycle storage.
South Lanarkshire Council has been at the forefront of plans for the interchange, which will feature new traffic signal-controlled junctions for areas north and south of the station whilst offering connectivity to Active Travel networks.
Network Rail will deliver station enhancements including:
- Accessible new footbridge with lifts for Giffnock station
- New footbridge and further station entrance for Clarkston station
- New station footbridge at Busby station

Stephen McCall, Network Rail programme manager, said:
“I would encourage East Kilbride residents to come along on the 11 October to meet the team and find out more about our plans for both stations and the sustainable benefits the wider project will deliver.”
“The East Kilbride Enhancement project will create an electrified railway that allows us to remove diesel trains from the network and introduce carbon-free journeys for communities along the East Kilbride to Glasgow railway corridor. This will be a game changer in terms of the passenger experience, as the benefits will include improved line speed, reliability of service and a greener, cleaner railway environment.”
