Formal planning permission has been granted to Network Rail to construct a new station at Leven, which is part of the Scottish Government’s £116m investment in the Levenmouth Rail Link project.

The planning application for the station was submitted in October 2022, and as construction was enabled by permitted development within the railway corridor, work on building the rail-facing parts of the station started in February 2023.

When complete, the station will have 205m-long island platforms, whilst at the entrance to the new station there will be a pebble-styled pavilion area. As the new station is situated next to Leven leisure centre, there will be easy access to connecting bus services and all existing active travel routes.

The station car park will have 133 car parking spaces with EV charging points and ‘blue badge’ accessible parking spaces, as well as space for cycle storage.

Leven is one of two new stations being built on the new Levenmouth Rail Link, with the other at Cameron Bridge under construction.
Since engineers started work on the station in February, they have constructed the new island platforms using 98 pre-cast units and around 200 cubic metres of concrete. This work was carried out at the same time as the redevelopment of the Bawbee Bridge which is located above the station site.

Joe Mulvenna, programme manager for Network Rail said: “Securing planning permission for Leven station is another step in the right direction for the project. It takes us closer to getting the full station development built and opened for public use.

“While there are conditions attached to the planning consent, these come as no surprise to us, and we are busy working through these with Fife Council so we can proceed as planned with the work.

“Every step forward is exciting, but the award of planning consent is a milestone that moves us ever closer to opening the rail link for the people of Fife.”
