Merseyrail has seen over 155,000 journeys made by passengers travelling to and from the 151st Open at Royal Golf Club on the Wirral peninsula last month.

The rail operator introduced a special timetable which saw a ten-minute service operating between Hoylake station and Liverpool centre throughout the event, which ran from the 19th to the 23rd of July.

The rail operator saw a sharp increase in passenger numbers with approximately 20,000 extra journeys as people travelled made their way to the event which saw the best golfers from around the world compete.

The rail operator’s efforts were very much appreciated by sporting fans thanks to the efficient services and the excellent customer service provided by the hardworking staff at both stations and onboard trains.

Pulling out all the stops, Merseyrail even strived to entertain passengers at station with stilt walkers and a living statue.

Prior to the 151st Open, Merseyrail also hosted the esteemed Claret Jug in Liverpool Station in a bid to get everyone into the swing of things for the special event.

Jane English, acting Managing Director of Merseyrail, said: “Yet again Merseyrail delivered a fantastic experience on an international stage for the thousands of passengers who travelled on our services during the week.”

“It was great to receive such positive feedback about the event organisation and the service we provided, including from many of our international passengers. We were also able to showcase the new Class 777 trains in passenger service for the first time on the West Kirby Line.”

“I’d also like to say thank you to our customers on the Wirral for their patience and support of Merseyrail

staff during the event. Some changes to timetables were needed to ensure that the network could cope with an event of this size, and we are really grateful for the understanding of those who were disrupted.”
