Tomorrow, Thursday, 6th July, (TPE) is holding a free event at railway station in West Yorkshire where bicycle owners can get their bicycles security-marked.

The free event is being held between at Huddersfield Station tomorrow morning between 8 am and 10.30 am, and will allow bicycle owners to have their bikes security marked using BikeRegister, which is the UK’s national bicycle marking & registration scheme and is recognised by the police.

Transpennine Express will be offering this service for all types of bicycle, including electric cycles, in collaboration with the (BTP). Each will be marked with a unique asset number that can then be registered with BikeRegister using its free online service that records bicycle owners’ details matched to the bicycle’s asset number.

The police can access the BikeRegister database to trace a bicycle’s owner, and if a bicycle is legitimately sold to a new owner the register can be updated to recognise the change of ownership.

When travelling by Transpennine Express, customers can book a cycle space up to 15 minutes before they travel. Most stations that are managed by Transpennine Express have free-to-use bike sheds.

Sergeant Steve O’Callaghan, BTP liaison officer at TPE, said: “I’ll be joining colleagues from TPE to offer a free five-minute service that helps cyclists protect their bikes against thieves.

“The bike marking includes adhering two tamper-proof stickers with unique QR codes to the bike fame – one which is obvious and another that’s hidden – and registering the details of the owner in a form so that they can be contacted in the event of a theft.”

“The bike marking process can act as a visual deterrent for potential cycle thieves and registering your bike on BikeRegister means you could be reunited with your bike in the event of it being stolen.”
